What is Botox?

The injection of botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, has become very popular for reducing wrinkles and rejuvenating the aging face. The effects usually last three to four months, but the injections can be done quickly, require no recovery time, and are not as complicated as many other cosmetic procedures for the face.

Botulinum toxin is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. When a small amount of Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. The effect is that it temporarily weakens or paralyzes the facial muscles and smooth's or eliminates wrinkles in the skin for a few months.

Getting a Botox injection takes just a few minutes after the consultation is finished.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin®️ is unique. It was the first clinically proven anti-wrinkle injection uniquely purified to remove proteins unnecessary for treatment. Xeomin®️ is a Botulinum Toxin Type A that blocks transmission of acetylcholine (ACh) from neuron to muscle. This inhibits muscle contraction and causes muscle paresis (weakness) or paralysis.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is an injection of the purified form of botulinum toxin - this toxin has proven to show great temporary improvement in frown lines. Dysport uses the botulinum toxin to block signals from your nerves to your muscles, lowering the contraction of musical that cause frown lines and smoothing out the face.

A very small needle is used to inject Dysport, making the procedure relatively pain free and the procedure itself takes about 10 to 20 minutes. Injections are recommended every 3 months and effects can last up to 4 months!

What is the difference?

When it comes down to it, Botox and Dysport are comprised of the same material - botulinumtoxinA. Where they differ is in the protein covering Botox and the protein covering Dysport. The proteins covering the two have different strategies on entering the body when injected. But once the proteins have melted away - it is the same thing. Everyone has preferences - talk with our physician on the best option for you.

One major difference between Xeomin and Botox is that Xeomin contains a “naked” form of botulinum toxin. Unlike Botox, which contains accessory protein, Xeomin designed to deliver the toxin without any protein additives. This purified structure may help prevent antibody resistance, a growing problem that has been seen with injections administered over time.

How do they work?

Botox/Dysport blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can't contract. That makes the wrinkles relax and soften.

Botox/Dyport are most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye), and frown lines. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox/Dysport. They can also be used for lip lines and for the chin and corner of the mouth and neck.

How Is a Botox/Dysport Procedure Done?

Getting Botox/Dysport takes only a few minutes and doesn't require anesthesia. Botox/Dysport is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes three to seven days to take full effect, and it is best to avoid alcohol starting at least one week before the procedure. You should also stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before treatment to reduce bruising.

How Long Does a Botox/Dysport Injection Last?

The effects from Botox/Dysport will usually last three to four months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear and need to be treated again. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox/Dysport?

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of Botox/Dysport. Headaches, which end in 24 to 48 hours, can happen, but this is rare. A small percentage of patients may develop eyelid drooping. This usually ends within three weeks. Drooping usually happens when the Botox moves around, so don't rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection or lie down for one hour after the procedure.

Who Should Not Receive Botox/Dysport?

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological disease should not use Botox/Dysport. Since Botox/Dysport do not work for all wrinkles, you should consult with a doctor first.
